In reality, the Algarve Sotavento has nothing special to do with Covid-19, however, this pandemic has significantly changed the way our customers look, and what they look for in properties they want to buy for living or investment purposes: different typologies, locations, and new needs have emerged since the pandemic appeared.
The Sotavento Algarvio with lower housing density has become an even more appreciated place for those who want to feel safer, work from home or look for a property where they can live during lockdown.
The capital of the region, Faro and the cities in the Eastern Algarve: Loulé, São Brás de Alportel, Olhão, Tavira, Castro Marim , Alcoutim and Vila Real de Santo António are exceptional in their different aspects. Undoubtedly everyone is charmed by them and their characteristics. The capital Faro with its "old town" within the city walls and the beautiful buildings in the center; the old fishing port of Olhão with its famous markets in front of the Ria Formosa and its cubist architecture, the villages of Moncarapacho and Fuseta; the historical city of Tavira with its Roman bridge and medieval castle, the villages of Santa Luzia and Santo Estêvão. Vila Real de Santo António on the Guadiana River, a city created in 1774 by the Marquis of Pombal and now the gateway to Spain, Alcoutim also next to the Guadiana River and the Serra do Caldeirão. Inland we have São Brás de Alportel with its Cork Route and fantastic handicrafts industry and Loulé city with its roots in Roman and Moorish history. The golden triangle with the exquisite Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo, and Vilamoura, famous for some very prestigious real estate and upmarket resorts, golf, and boating. Another gem that must be mentioned is the beautiful little village of Cacela Velha with its amazing fish restaurants.
Russell & Decoz over the last 30 years has had the pleasure of living & working in the region and getting to know all these destinations well. We have seen a lot of changes in this fantastic region of Sotovento, we helped many families to buy a house or business. It's been a pleasure going through a very positive life experience.
We recommend you get to know the Eastern Algarve, still genuine, with an excellent gastronomic plate and a wonderful climate.
For analysis we use a fantastic tool Pordata - probably the best database in Portugal, developed by the Manuel dos Santos Foundation. With the publication of the last 2021 Censos we share with you some indicators that seem interesting to us and that can help to better understand the region between 2009 and 2020: Number of residents in each municipality, average purchase price and sale of properties, resident foreign population and number of crimes recorded in each municipality (Portugal is one of the safest countries in Europe).
